House Rule: Casting Defensively
I'd like to propose a change to casting defensively as follows:
DC is : DC15 + Spell Level + Opponents BAB (and only BAB, no strength or feats etc) - so at first level your only increasing the difficulty by +1 in effect for the typical monsters your fighting.
If you keep Concentration at Max and take Combat casting you shouldnt have any issues overcoming a small increase. But it does mean when the fighter is waving his huge greatsword in your face @ 20th level your DC for that 9th level spell is 44. Making the challenge a whole lot more interesting ;-)

I would propose that the DC be 10+:
at 20th for a 1st level spell:
DC = 20BAB + 15 + 1 = 36
Ranks ~23 (assume average con).
DC36-23Ranks = 13 roll (less that 50% chance)
at DC 10+, we have an 8 roll for a 1st level spell.
I did wonder if 15 was too high...
but your forgetting Combat casting + Skill focus and increasing your con
If you assumed by 20th evel getting con to 16 is doable (+3) and combat casting that 13 roll becomes 6 and an d a 9th level spell becomes 16. (much harder)
DC = 10 + Opponent.BAB + Spell.Level
Roll required on D20 = DC - Skill
Skill max = Con.Bonus + Caster.Level + 3
so Roll required = 10 + Opponent.BAB + Spell.Level - Con.bonus - Caster.Level - 3
Assuming the Opponents BAB is about the same as the casters level we get :-
Roll required = 7 - Con.bonus + Spell.Level
Given a Con of 14 you get a 1st level spell needs a 6 and a 9th needs a 16. So almost all the time spell casting while in a threat zone has a 25% to 75% chance of failing, which will mean you should cast lower spells and it will fail some times. Note for a low spell a hero point will most likely sort it it out anyway.
I think this looks right, a spell caster should need to use lower spells, while in HTH and need to use Hero points when pushed.
